Adrianne (Host) :

Welcome back to KDKD Pet of the Week, brought to you by Davin Newman State Farm and The Dog Groomer. This is Adrianne, and with me today is Ms. Laura Himes with the Clinton Animal Rescue Endeavor and the Clinton Animal Shelter. Hello, Ms. Laura.

Laura (Guest) :

Good afternoon.

Adrianne (Host) :

And who do we have with us today?

Laura (Guest) :

I brought Blaze with me today.

Adrianne (Host) :

Hi, Blaze.

Laura (Guest) :

Blaze is a domestic short hair. We'll just go with the boy in turn. But she is a front de-clawed little female kitty. She's gray and white in color. The front declawed is a big thing. We don't do backs just because that's very unhealthy. Right. They have no way of getting them. She needs to be an indoor kitty. Right. But if you've got somebody who is living in an apartment that requires the cat to not dig up furniture, not dig up walls, things like that, she's perfect for that. She can be an indoor apartment kitty with no problem. She just can't go outside. She has no defense system. She can't climb a tree now. Mm-hmm. she can't defend herself from anything that comes after her dog's other cat anything so she definitely needs to be indoors and why would you want to put her outside anyway she's Beautiful cat.

Adrianne (Host) :

She is.

Laura (Guest) :

But the gray is so dark and pretty, and in the white contrast, she's quite the glamour girl. She is. Can you imagine a bright pink or purple collar on it? With the little jingle bells?

Adrianne (Host) :

Absolutely.

Laura (Guest) :

I love her pink nose. Yes. It's amazing how much their nose color can change the appearance of their face.

Adrianne (Host) :

It really makes a difference.

Laura (Guest) :

It does. She just looks very girly with her little pink nose. Thank goodness she's a girl.

Laura (Guest) :

Right.

Laura (Guest) :

That could be bad for you, buddy, if you were a boy.

Adrianne (Host) :

You could still be pretty if you were a boy.

Laura (Guest) :

Yeah.

Adrianne (Host) :

It just might bother you some. Yeah.

Laura (Guest) :

Nobody else but them, it might be. Right. Yes, she knows what's happening. star she likes to explore but not too bad yeah she's been up on the cabinet and looked at the mics and things like that but she i don't think she's ever going to tear anything up i don't think she's a chewer you know sometimes you get a kitten that's a chewer um she's not acting like she has any interest in chewing on wires or anything that's a plus but she does like to look around so if you don't want her on all your cabinet um too bad But she'll learn her space as far as, like, I think as soon as she figures out what everything is, where it all is at. Oh, sure. I think a lot of the curiosity will kind of mellow out. And then we'll be back to cat toys and treats and things like that. So, she's a pretty good girl.

Adrianne (Host) :

Yes. At least.

Laura (Guest) :

We were talking earlier. It's like, we're going to sit on the floor. And then the cat jumps up and sits in the chair.

Adrianne (Host) :

Okay. Yeah. What a cat.

Laura (Guest) :

Yeah. In a cat mode. Like, I'll just take this position of being in charge. Yeah. No problem taking charge there. Yeah. She's a good girl. She's been there for a little while, so I'd sure like to see her get out. Right now, we've got a lot. Lots of kitties to pick from, lots of dogs to pick from. There's just so many right now. And with the hot weather, you know, usually our adoptions go up whenever the weather starts to cool down. But our weather isn't cooperating. It's been pretty warm, continuing to stay pretty warm. We've had some cool days. And when we do, we've had some adoptions. i don't know what the correlation is i just think people want to get out and you know it's a reason for them to go for a walk if they've got a dog um you know when they get out and well same thing with their cat get time to go snuggle up in a sweater or a blanket you know have your bowl of soup and hold your cat or watch lifetime or you know i mean i don't think along that line it's definitely fall characteristics so we're kind of looking forward to that and it gets a little

Adrianne (Host) :

outside, you just want to cuddle up with your dogs. When it's hot outside, maybe you want to snuggle, but over there.

Laura (Guest) :

I want to go take a swim in the pool or something like that, but I don't want to smell like wet dogs. We'll let you go afterwards. She is definitely checking things out. And purring. She's purring all the way. My sister. Yes, you are. Tomorrow is our plan for pod? Yes, our casino night. Vegas night. So if you don't have plans, you definitely need to show up for that. It's going to be a very fun event. I believe it's $35 a ticket early purchase. If you wait until tomorrow night at the door, it is $40 a ticket. All the proceeds go back to helping take care of all these guys. Cats, dogs, food, lots of vaccinations, lots of medical bills. We've had a lot of medical bills this year. We've had a lot of heartworm this year. It seems like we're running phases, and this year's been a definite heartworm uptick, which is never a good thing. Anybody who doesn't know, those are carried by mosquitoes. They will kill your dog if you don't have them treated, because what they do is they build up in the heart valve, and they basically have a heart attack or a stroke. It'll go to the brain also, so it's not a good scenario. You can get a once-a-month chew from any of your veterinarians. Mm-hmm. And that will, they say it's a preventative. What it does is it kills anything that comes into the system. And when they're small and they first come into the system and you kill them once a month, you don't have to worry about them building up in the heart valve and blocking and breathing problems that way.

Adrianne (Host) :

If you do that early preventative, it's easy to clear out of there. But once they build up, it is so much different. It's definitely, yeah.

Laura (Guest) :

It can, I mean, after you have them treated, you're supposed to keep them calm, which, yeah, right. Right. it's like i feel better you know it's like yeah i know you feel better but you can't go out and run a marathon because you're going to have all that blood flow go faster and it's going to clog things up so you have to keep them very calm and still for a while like it's two to three weeks or something like that just to keep them very calm take them out for short walks so it's kind of a struggle on us too you keep make sure that you know you can't just come out in the playing yard let them go run right you can't do that you know you've got to make sure they stay calm and collected until Their time is up, and they get to go run like little wild dogs again. So, when everybody feels great.

Adrianne (Host) :

All right, recess is back on. Let's go.

Laura (Guest) :

Yes.

Adrianne (Host) :

Can we get that recess again? Awesome.

Laura (Guest) :

So, if you haven't traded your dogs, please check into it. It's just so much easier to do the preventative than it is to treat. Absolutely. And it's safer. It is pretty sketchy whenever you do the treatment.

Adrianne (Host) :

So, don't peek it out.

Laura (Guest) :

This looks like an exit point. No. Go outside.

Adrianne (Host) :

You're not going to want to go outside.

Laura (Guest) :

I'm going to put you back in the box. You can't just go running outside. That's scary. We've got the kidney drug dealer over here.

Adrianne (Host) :

Straight from the jar. Your mouth will not fit inside that jar.

Laura (Guest) :

She's trying to look through the jar. This is pretty good. I can't get to it. I can see it. As you can tell by the way she sways, we don't feed her nearly enough. starving cat. Yeah, she's a starving cat. Oh, but we were talking about our event tomorrow. Oh, playing surprise. Yeah. $35 or $40. I believe you come in and you get, I think they've upped the number of chips you get. I think you get up to 1,000 chips now.

Adrianne (Host) :

I did see that on Facebook.

Laura (Guest) :

To play with. So you've got a lot of incentive to go have a good time. And then in the evening, you get to pick prizes. There's all kinds of stuff. I believe we've had hair products and necklaces for the ladies and or the men, just depending on what you're into. There's been a kayak. There's been all kinds of car cleaning things. I mean, we're trying to get girls, guys, everybody that Sure. I mean, just a little bit of everything. And then there's baskets of, I believe there's one basket that is like a Bloody Mary mix. It's got all the different stuff there, plus snacks and all kinds of stuff like that. There's one that's an old-fashioned mixer with snacks and all kinds of things that goes along with it. Great for tailgating season. Oh, yeah. I mean, just take your little basket and you're set. Sure. There's one that is set up for nothing but your dog. It's got a bed. It's got a blanket. It's got the thrower for the ball with the ball. There's toys. There's treats. There's all kinds of amenities. So it's Christmas for your dog. So you can win all different sorts of things. It's going to be a really fun evening. You know, see if you can beat your friend. I get to pick first kind of thing.

Adrianne (Host) :

No, it sounds great.

Laura (Guest) :

Take whatever they want, and then you look like you're being really mean, but then you give it to them for Christmas.

Adrianne (Host) :

Oh, you wanted all of these things?

Laura (Guest) :

So it could be a really good time. It's from 7 to 10 tomorrow night, which is Saturday, October the 5th. In the Elks Banquet Room. And they do have an elevator. You do not have to take this chair. Like, I'm glad about the elevator. They have an open bench bar that's going to be on the backside of the building. So, you're free to go back and get your drinks. You don't, I mean, anything from water, soda, to whatever mixed drink you want. It's going to be a good time. And I think there's going to be snacks provided, too. So, I think we've got everybody set up for just about everything they could possibly want to have a good time.

Adrianne (Host) :

That sounds fantastic.

Laura (Guest) :

You really won't be. Missing a little in a dog or something.

Adrianne (Host) :

Don't tell anybody. Blaze, come here.

Laura (Guest) :

Oh, there he is. Good girl.

Adrianne (Host) :

You're going to have such a full tummy when you go back. Knowing that I've worked here. Sorry, Miss Laura. Yeah. That's the deal. You come see me and I get to spoil you.

Laura (Guest) :

The noises from the car later will not be fun ones. I'm going to make you pay. How are your windows working?

Adrianne (Host) :

Do they hold up?

Laura (Guest) :

What do you think, kiddie?

Laura (Guest) :

Oh, she is boring. I know. She's a happy girl.

Adrianne (Host) :

Yes, yes. All right. Well, is that everything that we needed to talk about today?

Laura (Guest) :

Is that everything I can think of? We're located at 1307 North Washington. Our phone number is 660-885-7999. Monday through Friday from noon until 5, 6, depending on who's there running that day. Saturdays, we're open from noon to 4. So we try to be open all the time other than when we're cleaning. So you can always call and make an appointment. Mm-hmm. And we've opened the door so you can just stop by whenever it's convenient for you. It's a little easier sometimes when you call ahead. So just an FYI, it might make it a little bit easier and quicker for you.

Adrianne (Host) :

And I know that sometimes when people call ahead, they might get the voicemail because you all need to be pretty much all the time.

Laura (Guest) :

Because we don't do anything down there. There's never a mess or anything like that. Laundry, dishes, feed the dogs, walk the dogs, feed the cats, clean the cats. Always need volunteers. Always need dog walkers. Almost always need somebody to help with kennel cleaning. So it's only two hours, but it's kind of a manual job. So it's a little tougher. It's not something you just walk in and go, oh, yep, I'm done. No. You're going to have some stuff to do. But it is pretty rewarding whenever you see the dog and cats come in and they're not doing as well as you hope.

Adrianne (Host) :

Right.

Laura (Guest) :

And then by the time they get to go home, to their forever home, they're happy, they're healthy, they look great, they're acting really well. Pretty rewarding.

Adrianne (Host) :

Yeah. Speaking of going to their forever home, if you want to stop by and visit Blaze the Diva Princess. She is looking for a home, and she is so sweet. You have to hear this purr for yourself. I don't think the mics can pick it up, but they should be able to. She's very loud. She's a pretty girl. Yeah. Blaze, anything to say to the people? Purr? Okay.

Laura (Guest) :

Thank you. I like temptations. I like long snuggles in the recliner on rainy afternoons.

Adrianne (Host) :

I like peeking out the window and climbing high on things.

Laura (Guest) :

If you'd like to put a bird feeder right outside the window, that's a bonus.

Adrianne (Host) :

We're going to shut up. All right. Bye. See you later.

Laura (Guest) :

Well, thanks for coming by today, Ms. Laura. Thanks for having us out.

Adrianne (Host) :

That's not the microphone. That's the arm. You've got to come down here and speak to the people. Come here. I'll show you. We're talking tonight. Can I pick you up? I know it's not your day. But we're friends now, right? I've fed you so many treats. There we go. Aw, thank you. Did I earn the right to snuggle? Because I gave you so many treats. Is that all? Well, now you can't go home, darn it, Blaze. You've got to stay here with me. You're so sweet. Come by Kitty Kitty and see the new cat, Blaze. Adrian can't put her down anymore, though. Okay, maybe I can. Hello. Oh, okay. You just want to stand on my shoulder. Oh, my goodness.

Laura (Guest) :

No, it's always got to be the highest. Be happy she's not on top of your head yet. I'm waiting for her to hit me on the springboard.

Adrianne (Host) :

She could have hit your feet like she was talking about it.

Laura (Guest) :

Let's see what's over here. Yeah.

Adrianne (Host) :

Okay. That was a gentle hop. I don't like that. Okay. So I feel better. All right. Well, come meet Lace. She usually does not like to be picked up, but if you feed her some treats, she will just be your best friend and a very comfy fall scarf. Thanks to our sponsors, Davin Newman State Farm and The Dog Groomer. Thanks to Ms. Laura and all of the volunteers at Clinton Animal Rescue Endeavor who have made this happen. Don't forget about playing for Paws October 5th at the Elk's Banquet Hall. A lot of great prizes to be won. Thanks to all of you for listening. This has been Adrianne with KDKD's Pet of the Week. Take care.
